Insights from Our Faculty
Christopher Gourdine, assistant dean and assistant professor of business administration, shared his thoughts on the bachelor’s in business administration program:
Many students know they want to work in a business environment, but they don’t want to narrow their options to just one area of business. These students are open to working in a number of areas over their careers and like the flexibility of being able to choose many of their courses. Such students can make good managers, as they have interests across multiple areas and are willing to explore them.
My best advice is to use the degree’s flexibility to focus on areas that add specific value to an organization. Generally, plan on taking two to three courses in an area you’re interested in to develop some depth. Courses on human resource management, project management, supply chain management, business analytics, e-commerce, social media marketing, and information systems can all attract the attention of prospective employers, especially when combined with internships and industry-recognized certifications.
I see a number of important traits. Among the most important are forthrightness and integrity, relationship skills, empathy, and a desire to serve both others and the organization. And a good business leader shows an openness to learning from others, including subordinates, plus a sense of humility that balances the formal authority that comes with their position. Also, not everyone has to be in a formal position to be a leader. A professional can practice leadership as a follower, which is often called “leading upward.”
Maryville’s business program takes an interdisciplinary approach that helps students develop skills across domains, including interpersonal interactions, analytics, and technology. We’re a diverse campus, with faculty and staff who really enjoy connecting with all students and supporting each one’s journey.
